Hello all, today is Harvey Milk Day!! This holiday was made to commemorate the life and activism of Harvey Milk. This day was picked to celebrate his life because on this day Harvey Milk was born. He moved to San Francisco from New York during the gay migration after the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village. He rallied for reform in his camera shop in the Castro, and soon became the first openly gay politician in America. Sadly, he was assassinated in his office and the Queer Rights Movement lost one of its heroes. Harvey continues to be an inspiration to queer people about the world and we look to him as a sign of hope. Below you can hear his speech on hope and hopefully will be inspired. Hello everyone!! Tomorrow is the International Day Against Homophobia so be sure to speak out against any anti-queer slurs that you may here and represent the MHS GSA Club well!! Keep being awesome y'all and stay safe~ <3
Hey everyone!! I forgot to post a few days ago, so here we go!! Friday was the Day of Silence (DoS), a national day where participants don't speak for however long they vow (usually the whole school day) as a statement of the voices of queer youth and their allies being silenced by bullies. I hope you all had a successful DoS and had some nice comments about your participation!! I heard of some harassment MHS students unfortunately had to face, and if this happened to anyone you know who participated, I would love to know in the comments. Stay safe and keep standing for queer rights!!
Hello all, today is the Trans* Day of Visibility!! On this day trans* individuals may feel more inclined to be more visibly out, and some choose this day to come out to people!! Today celebrate with your out trans* friends and relatives and keep supporting those that aren't out yet!! Have a good day everyone~
Hello all, I'm sorry to say that I forgot to post on the official Self-Injury Awareness Day on March 1st, but I wanted to address it as soon as I could. On this day we bring to light the widespread issue of self-harm and self-injury through educating people on the topic. Around this time, people will become more open to people about their self-harm and share their stories. Some even participate in the "Butterfly Project". Take this time to integrate some self-care into your life and support those who are struggling. Take care everyone <3
Hello all, today is National GSA Day!! On this day we celebrate the presence of GSA Clubs on campuses nation-wide and the efforts the students in these GSAs have put forth to make their schools more accepting. Have a wonderful time today and show pride for your GSA!!
Hello all, today is the first day of February!! That means today is also LGBTQ Black History Month!! This month is dedicated to all LGBTQ identified individuals whom are also of African-American descent. They have done everything from advocating rights, writing books, giving speeches, and even coming out to help spread awareness of the need for LGBTQ equality. Below is a link to a news article that lists a few of these influential advocates.
Hello all, today is the Holocaust Day of Remembrance. As most of you probably know already, homosexuals were targeted by Nazis as well as Jews, the mentally and physically handicapped, and anyone who did not fit his idea of the "perfect race". Homosexual men had to wear pink triangles for identification, and lesbian were often put with the "anti-social" group whom wore black triangles. Decades later, sexual minorities have taken these once demeaning symbols and turned them into symbols of pride. Please keep all these victims of the Holocaust in your mind today, and forever.
Hello all!! It's the start of our second semester of clubs at MHS, and I would like to have us all use this site more often to get more information out to you all. Instead of just posting events/holidays and their importance, I would like to start posting about more current events on the discussion page. I want to start off this new implementation by talking about Jewyles Gutierrez from Herecules. She is the transgender teen that we talked about in club today who is facing charges for standing up against bullies at her school. She had faced a lot of harassment and fought back against her aggressors physically. She is now being pressed with battery charges from the bully she fought back against. The following in a news article about her case, with video of Jewyles fighting back. Keep Jewyles in your thoughts, and I will be sure to inform you all when an update on her case comes out.
